Historian - Melissa Southern
Melissa Southern has been the forensic photographer for the Raleigh/Wake City-County Bureau of Identification (CCBI) in Raleigh, NC since 2004. She was the first International Association for Identification (IAI) Certified Forensic Photographer in North Carolina. Melissa conducts Facial Recognition/Morphological Analyses examinations as part of her duties with CCBI. Melissa has photographs published in the Guide to the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution, Nature Photographer magazine, various product magazines, and several other publications. She has published two books: one on the basics of photography and the other on fine art photography. Melissa has presented at Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend and the Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic (where she is a TEAM member for both events), Recreation Equipment Inc. (REI), the City of Orlando, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, various photography clubs, the Dataworks Plus Interconnect Conference (several years), the North Carolina International Association for Identification (NCIAI) Conference (several years), and the IAI Conference in 2021.
Melissa has served on a number of committees for the NCIAI and the Dataworks Plus Interconnect Conferences. She has judged numerous photography and art competitions over the years for various groups. Melissa has a B.A. in Anthropology and an Associate Degree in Photography with a concentration in Biomedical Photography.
